Christmas, 1863. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow laments a country at war with itself: “For hate is strong, / And mocks the song / Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" I, too, experience our divided states and like Longfellow, find hope in justice yet to be revealed. This musical meditation is based on John Baptiste Calkin’s 1872 setting of the poem.
