Oliver Goldsmith's epic poem The Deserted Village laments the decline of rural life. One section from the 18th-century work depicts the praxis of the village preacher. A compassionate man, akin in character to Victor Hugo’s later bishop, the preacher welcomes sinners and gently walks alongside them toward godliness. This choral setting flows peacefully through the vignette and emphasizes the preacher’s daily actions that express his love for his neighbors.
