We are scurrying about, yet the problems of the world are bigger than those of our day- to-day lives. When we pause to listen to the suffering of another person--in conversation, on the news, in a book, through a documentary--our emotional response may be as important to cultivate as our actions. In this piece, sarabande is a form of lament through its slow tempo and melodic fall into the second beat of a three-beat meter. In contrast, satire twists the same melody into a playful march. Shedding tears and taking steps are two of several ways to react to others’ suffering.
