The fearless, fire-breathing sea monster Leviathan is described in detail in the Biblical book of Job. In this tone poem, a ship represented by a folk tune encounters the chromatic, fragmented theme of the sea monster. With the string players stomping, Leviathan gradually destroys the ship, and a secondary melody from the beginning of the piece becomes a lament for its destruction.
